This is a wonderfully novelistic biography of Charlotte Bronte by a personal friend who is a better writer than Bronte was. Her depiction of the personalities may or may not be objectively true but they are inescapably real despite her Victorian reticence. Bronte may have had more imagination but Gaskell has more verismo.
