This book won the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award and it's easy to see why. The rhythm of the book keeps you captivated. He makes the war interesting and this particular book focuses on the Overland Campaign, at least where I'm at now. The fighting is incredibly bloody and fierce. At this time in the war the fighting had taken on a new flavor. You can read this book first if you want an introduction to Bruce Catton. This particular edition doesn't have the maps of Cold Harbor, Petersburg, and the Wildnerness, but it doesn't matter. Those are easy to look up online. The main thing about Catton is this: he's a brilliant narrative historian.

This book reads like a novel and was impossible to put down. It is so interesting and so filled with the pathos of the Civil War. Everything from the terrible strategic mistakes of the generals to the lack of communication to the camaraderie of the soldiers on both sides and their affection for each other brings home the horror of this period in our history.
