Now we know - more than any other factor in the war, the strength and endurance of the Russian people defeated Hitler and the Nazi war machine. As author Richard Overy, one of the world's leading experts on World War II, writes in his recent history Why the Allies Won (Norton, 1996), The decisive theater of operations lay on the Eastern front. With Russia's new world role taking center stage, and previously suppressed material coming to light from Soviet archives, historians of World War II will turn to the subject of Russia's leading role in defeating Hitler. This is the first fresh perspective - Russia's War - tied to a 10-hour national public television series.
