Hammond Innes is best known for his thrillers. This historical fiction "journal" is a completely different genre while expanding Innes' study of the psychological and interpersonal in his main character. Insofar as this novel involves Cook's exploration of the west coast of North America and the Bering Sea, then it is particularly relevant to this library. Innes writes with the knowledge and experience of a yachtsman from "sixteen years of sailing my own boat on the coasts of Europe."

From July 1776 until his murder in Hawaii on February 13, 1779, Captain James Cook commanded a pair of ships that explored the west coast of North America and the Bering Sea in search for a North West Passage and a North East Passage. Captain Cook kept an official log and journal that was published posthumously. Hammond Innes used this official record as the foundation for creating this fictional "journal" of Cook's private aspirations, strategic thinking, and fears during this amazing voyage of discovery.
