Tara*Starr and Elizabeth were best friends, even though they came from very different families. Elizabeth's dad has a good job in high-tech and her mom stays home. They live a life of luxury. Tara*Starr's parents live a very different life. They had Tara when they were very young, and they lived a carefree, or perhaps even careless, lifestyle.

But this has all changed. Elizabeth's parents have grown-up and cleaned-up their life. They have moved to a new city to pursue better opportunities. This has torn Tara and Elizabeth apart. They vow to keep their friendship together through an exchange of letters. In doing so we see how both girls deal with the unraveling of their lives. Tara has to deal with a loss of autonomy as her parents become parents. Elizabeth has to deal with the repercussions of her father losing his job. Both girls reach out through their correspondence and find a way to support each other, as well as vent and celebrate.

Told in the form of letters, authors Danziger and Martin each take on the voice of one protagonists, helping to keep the characters separate from each other. It is a quick read that may feel a little dated with the advent of email and social networking, but still has some validity for young people today.
