A journalist who made her mark with an article about an abused woman who murdered her husband, seeks out the now-deceased woman's daughter years later and hands over to her all the notes for the story, including a first-person account written by the murderer herself. As the daughter reads, so do we, and the story of Maureen English's fated ordeal unfolds with all the immediacy of a headline ripped from today's front page.
good book.....i liked the writing style.....woman leaves abusive marriage with her child and hides in a small town...

While predictable in many ways, this book has a sterling strength: it offers clear insight into why a battered woman, especially an educated professional would remain so long in that situation. The author does not attempt to psychoanalyze the character but allows her story to unfold. The book is set in the early 70ies and reflects the attitudes/assumptions about domestic violence of that time.
