Perfection. Well worth the wait.

Big fan of Allie Brosh. She is funny, and sensitive, and talented. But life is a struggle. It's not fair, and it's meaningless. OK. I can relate. God bless you Allie.

It has been seven years since Brosh published her first critically-acclaimed book: Hyperbole and a Half. I loved her first book so much, I couldn't wait for her next one. Brosh's new book examines her life's events over the past seven years, and she also reflects on her childhood. Brosh's observations are funny and sometimes heartbreaking.

I adore Allie Brosh. Her original work and ability to talk about the things that you only feel and can't put into words are renowned, and her first book, Hyperbole and a Half is the only book I have ever read where I was banned for reading it around the people as I couldn't stop laughing at it (her story about giving her dog an IQ test might be one of the best things I have ever read). I was concerned once the blog stopped updating, and then when the Facebook page went silent I wondered if she was okay. When I finally heard she was releasing a new book, I couldn't believe it.

Solutions and other Problems is not as funny as her first book, and that's okay. It is still hilarious, just not as zany. The reason it is not as funny as her first book is because she is now an entirely different person since then (aren't we all?), and this book reflects that. She has had more devastating experiences over the last few years than many do in a lifetime, and she touches on many more themes than she did last time; divorce, loss, and mental well being three of them. The chapter on her sister devastated me, and I found her descriptions of how the world changes after life-altering events to be some of the most moving and meaningful I have read. That being said, many of the chapters are hysterical, but don't read it thinking it is Hyperbole; part 2.

Funny, poignant, sincere. The illustrations are great, too.

Disclaimer: Brosh will always have a special place in my heart. I wrote my first love note to my now-husband on a page of her first book, Hyperbole and a Half. So needless to say, we've been anxiously awaiting her second book.

With that said - Solutions did not have quite the emotional impact on me that Hyperbole did, but that's a very high bar. Solutions still made me laugh out loud and cry before I was even halfway done, and I read the whole thing in one sitting. Brosh's writing and illustrations remain as witty, biting, and genuine as ever, albeit somewhat darker now.

Postponed indefinitely. Writing wasn't helping her depression so now doing other outlets.
