When The Fellowship of the Ring was first published in 1954 it was a story way ahead of its time. Or maybe its cultural resonance was so commanding that the decades following it would be forever altered? This is a non-argument for most as many of the great adventure novels of the 20th century are in some way influenced by J.R.R. Tolkien.

I read Fellowship of the Ring years ago and have since seen the Peter Jackson trilogy dozens of times. I forgot how much of story from the chapters before the Hobbits arrive in Rivendell resembles the tone of the Hobbit more than the distinct Lord of the Rings voice that will eventually take shape. It's like Tolkien spent the first part of the book morphing (evolving?) his style for his new epic.

If you've never experienced a fantasy novel before, then I tentatively recommend starting here. Fellowship is a classic that many have since tried to imitate because the journey feels as familiar as coming home, but the story also meanders which is both its strength and its weakness. It's easy to get lost in Middle Earth, or as Frodo phrased it, "It's a dangerous business going out of your door. You step into the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to."

The first part of the larger classic The Lord of the Rings, Rob Inglis does a fantastic job of narrating all three volumes.

Great book, the reader does a great job. Only issue is the first few disks are scratched/skipped so I had to just listen to the last half of the book. Hope

This was my third reading. The last reading was many years ago. After having read "The Hobbit" prior to this, at the outset, I was disappointed that Bilbo was no longer a major player. It did not take long for my disappointment to disappear, as I became enthralled with a new set of characters, and 'watched' as lifelong friendships were forged and a series of many adventures ensued.
In the past, this book was always my favorite in the trilogy. I will be interested in seeing if this still proves after reading the next two books this time. This is my first reading of the series since the movies came out.
