Descriptive and thorough retelling of the play by play events that occurred over 2,000 years ago with expert interpretations by the author. Although it is somewhat sad to read about the destruction of Athens and its democracy there is kind of a happier ending than I would have thought. #Thrasybulus>Thucydides

Dr. Kagan illustrates that democracy is not an inevitable social evolutionary state. Rather, it is a relative accident of circumstance; something truly special and fragile. It is subject to both outside threats and threats from within. The war with Sparta was a devastating war of superpowers and proxies. There are striking resemblances to the events of the 20th century. This is an extremely well researched and well written book.
