Best Superman story ever. And Loeb and Sale's best work ever too.

If you love supes or want a good primer this is for you.

Note: you may want to read John Byrne's man of Steel so you can fully appreciate this.

A beautiful re-telling of Superman's early years, narrated by 4 familiar character's widely different perspectives: Pa Kent, Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, and Lana Lang each take turns providing their insights on the Big Blue Boyscout during a different "season" of his early career. Please note: Sales' artwork is unconventional, but if you give it and its purposefully toned-down colour palette a chance you'll find it suits the gentle storytelling of Loeb to an absolute T.

Clark Kent in disguise as Superman or Superman in disguise as Clark Kent? I prefer the latter, and this book is about the former. It's very good, just not my cup of kryptonite. Also, Sale's Superman looks a little too 'booby' to me.

This is a beautiful story. Beautifully written, beautifully drawn and especially beautifully coloured. The four chapters encompass the four seasons and each is told from the viewpoint of one of Superman's cast of characters.

the different viewpoints provide a glimpse into the mind of one of the Man of Steel's characters as well as illuminating different aspects of his psyche. This is truly a story about Clark Kent and what, not just makes him a man of steel, but the fragility of man. This small book does the nearly impossible; it humanizes Superman, makes it possible to relate to him. It's both humbling and inspiring. Writers have such a hard time writing for Superman and creating a good story. This is one of them.

Tim Sale's art is really fitting here with his exaggerated proportions that are still soft and accessible. The style is retro with good graphic storytelling. The water colours bring it all together perfectly.

Together this adds up to be a beautiful comic.
