At about page 100 Mr. Rusdie "looses it". Novel became pretty well "word salad" and the theretofore plot became unworkable and unreadable. With dilegence (sp?) perhaps a tale could be mined from the following chapters, but I gave up the effort.
Up to page 100 or so, it had be a delightful read in magical realism, predateing Gabriel Garcia Marquez's bestsellers, I think.
