Set in 1920s France, this is a story of two lives touched by war and transformed by courage. Freddie, mourning the loss of his brother, meets Marie, a woman also marked by grief. Her story will lead Freddie to the caves above the village - and to a shocking secret. By turns thrilling, moving, haunting, this showcases the exceptional storytelling talent that has won Kate Mosse a legion of fans.

Whilst I read this book from cover to cover, I have to say that I didnt overly enjoy it. Predictable, unexciting and as a previous commenter has said - hard to understand how the protoganist could not figure it out himself! I wouldn't recommend this book unless you want a quick, afternoon read.

A good, cozy, read for a rainy afternoon. I found the historical aspect of the extermination of the Cathars in medieval France fascinating, and after reading this novel, would like to learn more about this time in history. The author's note at the end of the book has several books on the subject to recommend. Overall, highly enjoyable.

A gentle ghost story, THE WINTER GHOSTS is good for those looking for the supernatural, but not the gory. The story has good bones, but I would have liked a bit more flesh on those bones. I didn't get a strong feel for the location (France) or the time (between WWI and WWII) or the story behind the story (the religious wars in 14th century France). We know that Mosse can write a lengthy novel' I'm wondering why she chose not to do so here.

Good story, but easy to figure out. You spend most of the book asking the narrator why he can't figure out the biggest part of the book when it's so obvious!!! Still an excellent piece of writing, and a short read.
