More local intrigue, national secrets, romance and fine cuisine: the sixth novel in the internationally beloved mystery series

Bruno, chief of police in the rural French town of St. Denis, can't get a moment's peace. He's uncovered a cache of WWII-era banknotes on the deathbed of a member of the French Resistance and is also dealing with a wave of major local burglaries. The targets include the recently retired head of Britain's Joint Intelligence Committee, which brings Bruno's old flame Isabelle back to St-Denis, and into his heart.

The next burglary ends in murder: the victim's bludgeoned body is found by his lover, who becomes the prime suspect. But Bruno suspects there is more in play.

Meanwhile, the mayor introduces Bruno to Jacqueline, a Sorbonne academic who is researching the theory that American funds were used to obstruct communism in France following the Second World War, leading the U.S. to give clandestine support to the nuclear program. When Jacqueline's home is burgled and sensitive documents stolen (as well as a valuable family heirloom supposedly made by Paul Revere), the stakes become much higher. Jacqueline's work, suggests the mayor, is political dynamite.

The sense-stirring sixth novel in the internationally beloved Bruno series once again leads readers on a stimulating journey of local mystery and international politics while immersing them in the sights, sounds and tastes of the idyllic south of France.

I’ve got to say, the more you read of Martin Walker’s “Bruno” novels the more you become addicted to them. And what’s not to like: Bruno the engaging small town flic; the south-of-France countryside against which Martin’s novels are set; the good food and local wine that are featured liberally throughout the plot; or that cute little puppy dog, Balzac that steals the hearts of not only the ladies but of virtually everyone else too. Walker will take you to Perigord in the south of France where you almost smell the Lavender grow. A very engaging story. Enjoy.

OK. But not the best in this series.

Wondering if anyone else out there is getting annoyed at Bruno's menus and wine pairings which always seem to interrupt the flow of the story. The soap opera with Pamela and Izabelle is also becoming a little much.

Though I've enjoyed all the "Bruno" books by Walker, this is my favorite. The plot keeps getting more complex, yet Walker ties it together by his constantly surprising old and new characters. They seem so real to me, and he makes the Dordogne area of southwestern France breathe as much as one of the characters.

Another excellent addition to the BRUNO, CHIEF of POLICE series. After the little detour of the last book, THE DEVIL'S CAVE, we're back on solid ground with the wonderful (and strange) citizens of St Denis; fabulous descriptions of food, community, and the area; lessons in French history; and the triumphs and heartbreaks of our main character. Fantastic for fans of Hamish Macbeth who might like a little less humor, or fans of Louise Penny.

This series is outstanding--great characters, great plots, and a wonderful setting! These books make you feel like you are right there in St. Denis. The descriptions of food and wine are also delightful! The Resistance Man is excellent, but this series is best read (and savored) in order. Enjoy!!
