Add a CommentI enjoyed the story. The recording (with extra sounds for no apparent reason) was not so great. If you like dystopian future stories, this one is minimal but entertaining.
Though the dispassionate reader definitely detracted, I think the story itself fell short. The characters were underdeveloped, and the main character particularly seemed over-sheltered, having minimal understanding of how her world worked, and few words to describe what she did know. The story seemed more of a prelude to a larger story, and had little story arc of it's own; the book ends when the character is called to action and offers no suggestion as to what that action might be. While it may appeal to other readers, it definitely did not meet my own expectations.
In this companion to The Giver, we see a community without technology, living in primitive and non-cooperative ways. Kira, an outcast because she was born with a deformed leg, loses her mother and gains an important job. In the process, she comes to realize the truth about her village's dark side.
