If you love adventure, this book has it all. Trains, Sasquatch, circus and murder! It is 1888, and teenage Will Everett is aboard The Boundless, the greatest train ever built, on its maiden voyage across Canada. But all does not go well, and Will must enlist the help of fellow travelers Mr. Dorian and his Zircus Dante, along with the Maren the beautiful young wire-walker, to stop the villains before they get to the treasures in the palatial funeral car. This story has elements of steampunk and the supernatural, but at its essence, is an action-packed tale of danger and mystery that will not disappoint. Admittedly, I’m biased, as I’ll read anything by master Canadian storyteller Kenneth Oppel of Silverwing fame. (submitted by SG)

Exciting adventure novel by a popular Canadian author. Will Everett’s father over several years has moved from being a lowly railroad worker to being in charge of the world’s longest and coolest train – “The Boundless”. Will and his father are on board for its initial trip across Canada. Also on board is a wonderful circus with a beautiful tightrope walker/escape artist just Will’s age. There are millionaires, a famous Mountie running security, poor settlers moving west, and a few crooks who want to break into a funeral car which is rumored to be carrying treasure. All the complications are there that you might expect, with mysterious disappearances, fights on the tops of train cars, rescues by circus performers, and even Sasquatches. A fascinating cast of characters and constant adventure.

Wow, great book! Super exciting!

I generally enjoy Kenneth Oppel's works. While this one contained an interesting story, I felt confused with the details. An attack by a sasquatch is given the same weight as the striking of the "last spike". The plight of colonists (immigrants) coming to settle in Canada is dealt with the same as the hero being ensnared by a bog hag. The engineering feat of this super train is as believable as a origami "homing pigeon". It was hard to know what was based on facts (events, locations, people), and if everything was made up, nothing really had any weight for me as a reader.

Its a cool book. I felt like it takes a dark turn very quickly. Its a slightly creepy, but very adventurous book. I would recommend it to someone who likes action but fiction.

This is a book in the same vein as Oppel's earlier Airborn - a historical fantasy adventure featuring strange creatures, criminal schemes, and an awesome vehicle (in Airborn a blimp, and in this novel a massive train). Despite the similarities, this work and the world it creates feel fresh and interesting. I'd like to see some sequels, but it does stand quite well on its own.

Kenneth Oppel has a gift for language, crafting stories that sound authentic no matter when or where they are set. The Boundless offers the look and sound of the late 1800s.
