A great movie about fathers and daughters. You will be between laughing and crying at the same time sometimes. It so true. And with great actors.
If you like to watch an easy peasy happy ending Hollywood movie, this is not a movie for you.

This movie required inordinate patience at the outset as I fought off a strong urge to strangle the protagonist. His intrusive, idiotic behaviour managed to alienate everyone around him, including a great deal of the theater audience. However, perseverance paid off when it became clear what his motivation was. While his daughter never bought in 100%, I believe she finally saw enough of the "method in his madness" to allow her father some emotional room in her life.
While the theme was decidedly unorthodox in its presentation, this social satire nonetheless managed to deliver its message - stop and smell the roses - such that it deserved an Oscar nomination for best foreign film by the end. As one reviewer summed it up, "“Toni Erdmann'... is its own kind of rebellion, a thrilling act of defiance against the toxicity of doing what is expected, on film, at work and out in the world."

Far too long for sustained watching; material is not sufficient to hold the movie together. You get tired of Peter Simoniscek's antics-even in a huge bird costume.

It is just not funny, rather sad. About this man crying for attention, and imposing himself on everyone else.

It's worth the watch, but you cannot expect the plot to be just handed to you.

Toni Erdmann - 4 stars and a half! I would NOT call it a comedy. Conceptually, this movie is about life. And life is about the endless journey. The director does not spell out the story, the audience has to make sense of it. There is more here than what you see on screen, but you won't get the full picture unless you open your mind. This movie is recommended for: emotionally mature people with adult children (I think you will enjoy it the best). This movie is NOT recommended for: North American audiences expecting a Hollywood blockbuster, or a "very funny" movie.

Toni Erdmann" is a 162-minute comedy/drama from Germany about a prank-loving older man who pays a surprise visit to his corporate consultant adult daughter and begins to throw her uptight life into chaos. That plot description could easily apply to a traditional Hollywood comedy that probably wouldn't be very good, but the genius of writer-director Maren Ade's film is how she portrays these characters like fully dimensional human beings and grounds their actions in a believable way even as things escalate to hilariously crazy levels. The movie also works because Ade mixes the humor with real earned drama and emotion, so that by the end you really end up caring about this lovably awkward father-daughter relationship.

Shoulda, woulda, coulda. Shoulda listened to the reviews that this movie was way too long & drawn out. Woulda spent 3 hours outside watching the grass grow instead. Coulda made more sense out of the grass growing than this bizarre, painfully slow movie. If they would have ended the movie after 90 minutes, after the conversation with her boss, I would have said "interesting movie, well done", but the next 90 minutes just got monotonous & way too art school bizarre. Like others, I was left wondering what was the point.

Often slow and at times almost painful to watch (I was never sure what the point of the film was as none of the characters appeared to advance in terms of personal growth no matter how many lessons or roadblocks they seemed to come up against), but the characters and their often weird arcs (and the continual head butts between father and daughter) had an odd appeal nevertheless.

How was your night with the Chinese?
-Well, after 30 minutes they were drunk. So I sat there for five hours, listening to Mandarin. But I sold one flat, at least.
-So that's good.
Oh, yeah, because we were just fighting over...who had the most horrible weekend.
-Steph was in Naples.
How was it? What happened? It's filthy, the food was disgusting. Even the kids were dying to get back, so, you know.
--Well, I probably had the most horrible weekend of my entire life, actually. Yeah. My father visited me spontaneously, without any warning. He was there standing in my office... pretending he wanted to bring me my birthday present... but actually he was just having a crisis because his dog died at home. Henneberg (CEO of company) was wanting me to go out with him and his wife the whole time. ... And my father was sitting around, making spaghetti... trying to talk with me about the meaning of life, whatever that is. Strange.

I've hired a substitute daughter.
-Perfect. She will call on your birthday instead of me.
And what's most important when dealing with the clients?
-That no concept makes sense if the client doesn't want it. The art is to tell the client what he actually wants.
Good evening. I'm only the father.
-Henneberg. Are you visiting?
A spontaneous decision. Never been to Romania. I'm actually here to negotiate with her. She's hardly home anymore so I hired a substitute daughter. Now comes the question who pays her.
- That's a modern solution.
- Is the other daughter better?
The cakes are better. She cuts my toenails.

So... Are you a bit happy here, at least?
-What do you mean by happiness"? It's such a strong word...
I mean do you have a bit of a life, too? Like going to the movies or something?
-Well, yes... just doing something you enjoy.
Lots of words around here: fun, happiness, life... We should sort it out. What do you think it's worth living for?
-If you want to discuss the big topics... I can't say that off the top of my head. I really just wanted to know how you're doing.
I know that. But then you should have your own answers.
Women's group? What are the themes?
-Gender quotas, sexual harassment at work, things like that.
Business nail polish?

It's actually more interesting and Romanian than the Ceausescu palace. It's Europe's largest mall and no one has money to buy anything.
And who did you leave Willi with?
-Well, Willi... Willi, unfortunately, has died.
What? I'm so sorry.
-He was an old dog.
Why didn't you call me?
-Because I don't always have the time, either.
Dad, these processes mean hundreds of employees being transferred and later laid off. These decisions are unpopular, so he would need to blame someone else. Then you can read in the paper that some consulting firm has ruined something.

The Dombrechts are cutting your hedges tomorrow. You are blocking their sun.
-At last. I'll be able to shoot right into their living room.
About what's worth of living. The problem is... it's so often about getting things done. You do this, you do that... And in the meantime... life just passes by. But how are we supposed to hang on to moments? Now I sometimes sit there and remember how you learned to ride your bike... or how I once found you at a bus stop. But you only realize that afterwards. In the moment itself it's not possible.
Please, can you just tell him not to fire that man or something?
-That's up to him. The more he fires, the fewer I have to fire.
Do you have any plans in life other than slipping fart cushions under people?
-I don't own a fart cushion.
I know men your age who still have ambitions.
