What Angels Fear is the first in C.S. Harris' lengthy Sebastian St. Cyr historical mystery series. This series is highly atmospheric and filled with rich details about life in London during the Regency Era. For me, what draws me to each installment in the series is the characters. Sebastian and those that come into his life throughout the course of this series keep me coming back. It's a series that only gets better with time!

I am so very thankful to all those who had encouraged my quick entrance into the world of Sebastian St. Cyr. I'm now a believer! What Angels Fear was a fascinating and absolutely fabulous read.

I quite enjoyed this book. The different locations were described very detailed. The pace could have been quicker but the slowness kind of worked here.

What a delight to stumble across this story and author. C. S. Harris manages to do something truly amazing in creating a book that is gripping from start to finish while simultaneously showing the reader a thorough view of the politics and social structure of a specific historical period. The writing is excellent: no cliches or dramatics. Just a perfectly crafted story.

This could have been a great book with more care and attention to the writing style and not such a light touch about the characters which edge towards the stereotype. As it is, if you like a bit of dark in your Regency detective mystery then this would be a good choice for you.

Slow and overwrought, I struggled to get through this book. While I've enjoyed many other mysteries set in Georgian, Regency, Victorian, and other time periods, I kept putting this one down. It wasn't at all the fast paced page turner promised by the blurbs and reviews. The premise doesn't quite make sense. And despite the fact that it takes place in 1811, Sebastian, the protagonist, must have had a very speedy form of transport to zip him around London so quickly. Not recommended.

I picked this up after I finished Deanna Raybourn's Lady Julia Grey mysteries, and loved it. This series is a little darker and a little less romantic, but there's still plenty of historical angst mixed in with the mystery.

A historical mystery that will be enjoyed by fans of Deanna Raybourn & Tasha Alexander.

And because she loved him so much, because she would always love him, she forced herself to say what needed to be said, although the worse tore open every old bleeding wound she'd hidden away so deep within her.
