An enchanting novel of fierce loyalty and love in changing times, from the bestselling author of Light a Penny Candle.

Big, generous-hearted Benny and the elfin Eve Malone have been best friends growing up in sleepy Knockglen. Their one thought is to get to Dublin, to university and to freedom...

On their first day at University College, Dublin, the inseparable pair are thrown together with fellow students Nan Mahon, beautiful but selfish, and handsome Jack Foley. But trouble is brewing for Benny and Eve's new circle of friends, and before long, they find passion, tragedy - and the independence they yearned for.

ohmygoodness, this book. every single character was developed with such care and i fell in love with every single one of them (well, almost every single one of them, looking at you, you know who!). and Benny, oh, dear Benny. everything about this book was, from the details, to the story, absolutely wonderful. such an epic and amazing tale.

Perhaps my favorite Maeve Binchy novel of them all. Her books are written in such a charming and heartfelt way, you feel as is you're in the small Irish village watching as the storyline plays out. Wonderful!

Maeve Binchy is my go-to author for gentle reads. She writes about the dramas of everyday life. I found myself rooting for the main characters, who are all so different. There is Benny, the much-doted-upon only child; Eve, the orphan child who grew up in a convent; and Nan, who was raised to believe she deserved and could get a better life than she grew up in. I also love getting a glimpse of life in Ireland.

A great book, I saw the movie and was inspired to read the book and I wasn't disappointed. I'm looking forward to reading her other books.

This was the first book I ever read of hers, and I have been hooked ever since reading every one of her novels. Its a story about friendship and love, and always has a great ending.
