"Just before dawn on a Sunday morning, three teenage boys go surfing. Returning home, exhausted, the driver lets the car drift off the road into a tree. Two of the boys are wearing seat belts; one is sent through the windshield. He is declared brain-dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. His heart is still beating. The Heart takes place over the twenty-four hours surrounding a fatal accident and a resulting heart transplant as life is taken from a young man and given to a woman close to death. In gorgeous, ruminative prose it examines the deepest feelings of everyone involved--grieving parents, hardworking doctors and nurses--as they navigate decisions of life and death. As stylistically audacious as it is emotionally explosive, Maylis de Kerangal's The Heart has mesmerized readers in France, where it has been hailed as the breakthrough work of a new literary star"--Provided by publisher.

Sorrow and tension are present through this whole book, peppered with hope. A truly staggering piece, with beautiful prose that's stylistically challenging but compelling in its complex portrayal of human lives. The translation work is incredible. Read this novel as quickly as you can; stop and consider how incredible and unlikely life really is.

Beautifully written, this book tells the story of a heart transplant from the perspectives of family members, doctors, nurses and others intimately involved in the process. Beginning with a horrible car accident and concluding with a new heart for a critically ill woman, the characters are believable and the story is compelling in this age of medical miracles. There isn't a "what comes next" feeling in reading this book, as it is clear from the beginning what will ultimately happen, but observing the characters during the process is beautifully written.

A moving and surprisingly tense story about parents faced with the decision of taking their injured son off life support, while those who know how useful his organs can be to others wait in the wings. I read this "in one gulp" - great writing.

A very relevant topic in a novel from a French author. Her 2nd translation into English.
This June 2016 week, the low rate of organ transplantation is being highlighted in NZ.The need for a donor register is once again being requested.
Here is an excellent piece of fiction, that is "bracingly topical"
I give it 4+ STARS
