Biography of Mike Pence written by two award-winning journalists.
Little-known outside his home state until Donald Trump made him his running mate, Mike Pence--who proclaims himself a Christian first, a conservative second, and a Republican third--has long worn a carefully-constructed mask of Midwestern nice. Behind his self-proclaimed humility and self-abasing deference, however, hides a man whose own presidential ambitions have blazed since high school. Pence's drive for power, perhaps inspired by his belief that God might have big plans for him, explains why he shocked his allies by lending Christian credibility to a scandal-plagued candidate like Trump. In this landmark biography, Pulitzer Prize-winner Michael D'Antonio and Emmy-nominated journalist Peter Eisner follow the path Pence followed from Catholic Democrat to conservative evangelical Republican. They reveal how he used his time as rightwing radio star to build connections with powerful donors; how he was a lackluster lawmaker in Congress but a prodigious fundraiser from the GOP's billionaire benefactors; and how, once he locked in his views on the issues--anti-gay, pro-gun, anti-abortion, pro big-business--he became laser-focused on his own pursuit of power.

Enlightening as far as it goes. My personal opinion, Pence is just biding his time 'til he can run for Pres. on his own. Feels God has CHOSEN him for President. Evangelical Christians interpret the Bible differently on many areas than Lutheran Evangelical Christians!

The book seems to be well researched, but I found it to be repetitive and dull. I don't think that is really the author's fault since Pence seems to be a repetitive and dull guy. He seems to be the sort of politician who commits to nothing, while maintaining his own personal goals. Most of these goals relate to evangelical Christianity and a striving for power. It would be wise to think carefully about whether you would want this guy to be the next president.

It may be best if you count to ten before commenting...also I suspect that you are a Canadian library employee so you are representing more than yourself.

To General America:
Have you read the book?

The comment section demonstrates in a single screen shot what is wrong with the majority of Americans today. You have two five star ratings, one by someone who clearly hasn't even read the book "I HOPE this book mentions..." and a half star condemnation by someone calling it 'fake news' when the book contains 16+ pages of notes backing up from independent sources much of the book's contents.

We use to be able to believe that those who took the time to read books did so with an open mind, hoping the book they invested time into would enlighten them, or challenge them, or at very least inform them. Now the time and effort of the authors is reduced to people who mindlessly embrace or condemn based on uniformed tribalism.

This book is a well written, well documented overview of VP Pence's political career up to 2018. There is very little in the book that those who read it from the right would find anything other than inspiring. There is even less in the book that would cause those on the left to feel anything but concern. But Pence is a human being, not a meme to be used to make one's existing political views.

Love him or hate him, the authors have done a great job trying to help individuals with open minds begin to understand him. Those who clearly haven't bothered to invest the time to read the author's work should troll their uninformed comments somewhere other than a library site where READERS share their thoughts.

I hope this book mentions how Pence was paid thousands by Big Tobacco to promote smoking and to LIE and say that smoking doesn't cause cancer. Pence is nothing but a lying con man. Hope he has fun in hell because that is where he is headed.

Pure nonsense. And this is why they call it fake news. Because idiots like this are writing it.
