Twisty medical mystery!

Meghan is sick with a mysterious ailment...doctors are unable to identify what is causing her symptoms to occur. Rather than getting better as time goes by, she seems to be getting worse. Meghan’s mother Becky is absolutely devoted to finding out why her daughter is so sick; nothing but the best doctors will do, and there’s very little she won’t do to ensure her daughter receives the proper care. Meghan’s father Carl has grown weary of the constant rounds of doctors and tests and begins to wonder if there’s something more to Meghan’s illness...

When a diagnosis of Munchausen syndrome by proxy is suggested...meaning that Meghan is purposely being made ill by her mother in order to gain attention, everything these parents thought they knew is thrown out the window...what is really going on with Meghan? Surely she can be saved...but from what? Or who?

PROS: Saving Meghan will certainly keep you guessing!

CONS: SLOW!!!! Super slow, like really sloooooow in the beginning. Since I’m not passionate about medical mysteries, I found it kind of excruciating...but then the second half picks up, and I had no idea what the ending was going to be!

YES or NO: It’s a YES if you are into medical mysteries, but it’s a NO if you aren’t. In my opinion, there is definitely more of a focus on the medical rather than the thriller...just something to be aware of!

The pace of this plot was steady and although it did keep your reading and page turning, there just didn’t seem to be enough to get me to really like the book. Yes I was intrigued by what was going to happen next, if everything was really all in Becky’s head, if there were other things behind it, or if Meghan really was sick with some weird rare condition.

The mystery aspect of it was not too bad and getting to the bottom of it was basically what carried the novel for me. It did feel like bits here and there were dragging and by the last third of the book I pretty much wanted it over with as it was just getting too much. You really do feel for Meghan here because she’s caught between both her parents and you can feel her isolation.

I don’t feel much for the other characters mentioned in the book. They’re really not that likable - Meghan would probably be the one I like the most in this book but even then her personality is flat and not that much substance is put into anyone.

The last third of the book got me to forgive the slow dragging plot. It was like watching an avalanche go down a hill and the pace got super quick after that. It was enough to get me to forgive the book for the slow dragging plot as I pretty much wanted to know what was the final outcome and what was the ending of it all.

Slow plot, great mystery aspect with bland characters, it’s an interesting read and if you’re into the slow build up to a climactic ending, then by all means read it. It was okay for me.

Saving Meghan by D.J. Palmer is a medical drama injected with many twists and turns. Fifteen-year-old Meghan is the daughter of Becky and Carl Gerard. For years she has been plagued by mysterious illnesses which have baffled numerous physicians and divided her parents when it comes to deciding what to do. When her health deteriorates further, doctors and social workers begin to suspect Becky of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, meaning that the parent makes her child sick on purpose to gain attention and admiration. What could be the cause of Meghan's ill health? Just when the reader thinks the mystery is solved, something or someone else moves the story into another direction. Saving Meghan will keep you entertained and guessing until the last page.

From the beginning you are pulled right in to the family drama. Why is Meghan sick? What is wrong with her? They try a new doctor and seem to have made a breathrouhg, but soon the question becomes: Is Meghan really sick? Or is there some family dynamic being passed down to her from her mother's dysfunctional experiences as a child? Told from the perspectives of Becky (Mom), Meghan and Zach (a doctor who may have the key to save Meghan, or is he dealing with too much baggage from losing his own child in the past). It is a tangle and Palmer takes us through to the end. The storyline seemed to drag for a time in the last half. Still would recommend to thriller lovers as this one is centered around a medical situation rather than a murder or string of them.
