As someone who is on the wrong side of 40, I have no business commenting on contemporary hip-hop albums, but nobody else has. I work in a high school, so I at least try to be aware of what students are listening to. I don't know what the kids think of Long Beach rapper Vince Staples, but I really enjoyed his 2015 debut album. Partly I like it because it avoids a lot of the pitfalls of mainstream rap, like Auto-tune, a surfeit of high profile guest stars, lazy lyrics about money and women, and albums that go on too long. This is a compact, tight, and highly engaging, both lyrically and musically, album that has a classic sound to it, but also is very much of the moment. And how can you miss with a song called "Norf Norf"?
