This is a quiet film. It explores the relationship between inmate Roman Coleman and the mustang he is tasked to train for auction. Both have trust issues. Both are seeking companionship and redemption. Roman has been in jail for 12 years for the brutal assault on his spouse that left her brain damaged. The movie starts with the psychologist asking how he feels about being in solitary to which he responds, "I'm not good with people". The gist of the story is that Roman does not feel redeemable, does not feel capable of love, and is terrified by his own anger and needs. He is not looking to get out of jail as he feels that jail is exactly where he needs to be and is a suitable punishment for his crime. Through training Marquis, Roman learns to delve into his feelings and by the end of the movie he is on the path to self-love and forgiveness. A simple but powerful story.

We loved this movies and highly recommend it....convicts interaction with horses and with other convicts.

I believe that rehabilitative programs such as training horses and assistance dogs are very important for prisoners. Some may have never experienced loving care in their own lives. The empathy that grows with the animal is a valuable lesson. There was one aspect of the film that did seem plausible. I believe participation in such programs is earned and maintained by " good behavior " in the prison system. Roman kills or attempts to kill his cell mate who killed his friend, yet is out riding horses the next day.... This did not seem plausible to me. Otherwise an inspiring film. Kristi & Abby Tabby

Top-notch acting by Matthias Schoenaerts from seemed real as if it was not acting. Based on true life....there actually is a rehab program in Carson City, Nevada, where inmates train mustangs. Filmed at the former Nevada State Prison in Carson City.

3.5 Good and sad at the same time. Wonderful story which is true.

I thoroughly enjoyed this Redford film which reminded me very much of his similar film Buck that I highly recommend. Yes, the Mustang population is a fact. Yes, the prisoner population is a fact. Seeing Mattias S. in a very different role/character revealed his acting ability to inhabit the character. Bruce Dern was excellent with the crusty old man.

I forgot to check the details if Buck Brannaman helped on the horse scenes. I could enjoy this film again in a few years.

Credit Robert Redford as Executive Producer with bringing a really fresh story to the screen. Think of it....A western movie directed by a French director with a French film production company. A movie without big box office stars. In my opinion, the star of the movie is a horse. A darn smart horse with quite a story to tell through the characters in the movie. Bruce Dern is especially funny as the lead cowhand at the stables. My wife and I both would have clapped if we had been in a multiplex theater!!

A good movie to inform viewers about the mustang problem and how it is dealt with. I never knew there was an over population of these horses.

Beautifully filmed, if a little slow and perhaps pretty unrealistic.

I enjoyed this movie more than I thought I was going to. The acting is great. The story is a bit slow but the acting kept me interested.
