Mama's Last Hug
Animal Emotions and What They Tell Us About Ourselves
Large Print - 2019 | Large print edition
A whirlwind tour of new ideas and findings about animal emotions, based on De Waal's studies of the social and emotional lives of chimpanzees, bonobos, and other primates. De Waal discusses facial expressions, animal sentience and consciousness, Mama's life and death, the emotional side of human politics, and the illusion of free will. He distinguishes between emotions and feelings, all the while emphasizing the continuity between our species and other species. And he makes the radical proposal that emotions are like organs: we don't have a single organ that other animals don't have, and the same is true for our emotions--

Add a CommentThe title says it all. This book ought to be required reading for all students(possibly age 10) with class discussion with a specialist in the subject.
Also for all those working with animals!
"Mama's Last Hug", "Are We Smart Enough To Know How Smart Animals Are", and "Chimpanzee Politics" are eye-openers in more than one way. All by the same author, published over a time of over 30 years. Watching some TED-talks by Frans de Waal will also not disappoint/.
I would recommend this to anyone wanting to better understand animals, especially primates. It includes an explanation of what "alpha male" truly means.
This book provides fantastic powerful supports to the idea that all lives on the Earth are somewhat connected. We human are not that “advanced” and other animals are not that “inferior,” so each life and each perseppective require equal respects.
