Another good mystery, Sandra Brown keeps you guessing to the end!

Arden Maxwell decides to have her baby and live in the house that she and her sister vacated when Arden was ten year old. At the time, their father had disappeared leading to accusations that he committed a burglary of a local business and the murder of one of his accomplices. However, it isn't long before she loses her baby in the middle of the local grocery store. While trying to survive the depression that follows, Arden's sister, Lisa, attempts to convince her to come back with her to Dallas until she decides what to do with the rest of her life, but Arden isn't ready to leave the past behind and makes a plan to renovate the house using local contractor Ledge Burnet. Ledge's initial refusal doesn't deter Arden because she is now determined more than ever to find out what happened the night her father left them on the eve of Easter all those years ago.

Troubling in Thick as Thieves is that Arden's miscarriage is seemly no more than a plot device that is gone as quickly as it is mentioned, however, the book is filled with suspense and intriguing secrets leading to a couple of dandy twists near the end of the book. The plot, though, doesn't hold up in the last several pages of the book, and the dialogue becomes stilted and less than realistic. These issues detract from a story that has many strong points. Overall, this is a decent romantic suspense story with a somewhat overly dramatic ending. 3 1/2 stars.

This book has all the things I love about Sandra Brown and while not her best, is better than her last few offerings. As usual, you'll find a twisty plot, a spunky heroine and a complicated hero. In true Brown fashion, you'll reach the end going, "Wow, I didn't see that one coming." The story is told in a combination of flashbacks and present day encounters and centers around Arden Maxwell, who returns to her home town and the home she and her sister abandoned after their mother was tragically killed and their father, suspected of robbery and murder, disappeared without a trace, presumably with half a million dollars. Arden's return puts her under the scrutiny of a unscrupulous DA and brings her to the attention of Ledge, an ornery carpenter she approaches about completing renovations on her house. Romantic sparks fly and the tension ratchets up as Arden seeks to find out the truth about her father and the robbery that happened twenty years earlier.

I always enjoy a Sandra Brown novel. This one didn't dissappoint. It kept me guessing and the twist at the end was one I didn't see coming.

before p.100 I knew the story. For the first time in my reading life (I started at 3 and am now 76) I went to the end. I read some pages as I was getting there to make sure I had the story straight and I was right. I don't know if I've I'm too old and read too many books and they are all becoming the same or this was poorly written. This is a first for me.

A 20 year old mystery is solved using clever flashbacks of the original crime and what the various characters are up to now in 2020. Brown's characters are always fully realized - great heroine and a handsome but of course complicated hero.

Only issue I had was the very beginning when there was a tragic start to the story.
