Hidden in the depths of eighteenth-century London, a secret apothecary shop caters to an unusual kind of clientèle. Women across the city whisper of a mysterious figure named Nella who sells well-disguised poisons to use against the oppressive men in their lives. But the apothecary's fate is jeopardized when her newest patron, a precocious twelve-year-old, makes a fatal mistake, sparking a string of consequences that echo through the centuries. Meanwhile in present-day London, aspiring historian Caroline Parcewell spends her tenth wedding anniversary alone, running from her own demons. When she stumbles upon a clue to the unsolved apothecary murders that haunted London two hundred years ago, her life collides with the apothecary's in a stunning twist of fate, and not everyone will survive.

I liked the narratives between past and present but I did not find this to be a fast read or all that much of a mystery but I enjoyed it. I don't think that in the present tense a woman's life is "ruined" by infidelity because that declares ownership and I think we have progressed beyond that boundary.

I really liked that this book felt very different from what I've read lately. I appreciated the idea behind this book, and loved that we were learning the story of this apothecary from both the lens of when it existed in history, and from the re-discovery of these women's stories in the present day. If you're looking for an easy read that is engaging, mysterious, and has some historical intrigue, you might really enjoy this one!

A fun historical mystery set between presented and past London. Caroline's life is in ruins after she finds her husband is cheating on her. She's takes their anniversary trip alone to London and a chance find in the mud flats sends her down a path of historical murder and secrecy. In the 1800s, Nella lives alone dealing out poisons women who need to kill a man in their lives. The novel really gets going as the past and present chapters get closer and closer together. This is a quick and easy read and despite the dark subject matter it never delves too deep into the macabe.

Caroline, betrayed and unmoored, takes her wedding anniversary trip to London...alone. Finding an antique vial sets her on a path of historic and self-discovery. In 1791, the apothecary lists the women who seek her help, including Eliza, in a dangerous trade that threatens their lives.

Too many coincidences make the plot artificial and strained . Also being abruptly tossed back and forth between 1812 and the present destroys the atmosphere of mystery the author intended to create.

The book starts off slow but then it gets really interesting. I do like the first person interaction. The story is great and very original, I've never heard a story like this. Great combination of history and all things English. The ending is very sweet and I loved it. Great read!

I love reading debut novels...there's just something extra special about discovering a whole new talented person with endless potential. Sarah Penner definitely fits that bill and I was absolutely STUNNED by how great this book was. Dual timeline between present day and 18th century London, the lives of three women collide across history as they all grapple with freeing themselves from the toxic men in their lives. Gorgeously written and compulsively readable, full of history and heartache.

A New & Noteworthy fiction staff pick 2021. Two timelines swirl around an apothecary shop where poisons are concocted to assist women who have been betrayed. This debut is the top March pick chosen by librarians across America for Library Reads.
