The first half of the book is a fascinating read. Nursing in Dublin just after WWI when the Spanish flu was decimating the world. Julie is an unusual woman who thinks for herself but is working in a strict hierarchical system both as a nurse and as a Catholic in a heartless theocracy. The scene on the roof top is a the weak link in the plot; it is just bringing in too many issues. Julie is barely conflicted about the momentous decisions she has taken over chaotic 3 days. A bit more effort on the part of the author would have made this a great book. As it is, it is good enough.
